A bit of history

Bioenergy Europe (formerly known as AEBIOM) is the voice of European bioenergy. It aims to develop a sustainable bioenergy market based on fair business conditions.Founded in 1990, Bioenergy Europe is a non-profit, Brussels-based international organisation bringing together more than 40 associations and 90 companies, as well as academia and research institutes from across Europe.

  • Our mission

    • To follow EU-level legislative developments related to bioenergy;
    • To communicate the opportunities and concerns regarding the development of bioenergy in Europe to EU policy makers;
    • To develop, deepen and disseminate knowledge on the use of biomass for energy from scientific, technological, economic, social, legal and political perspectives relevant at European-level;
    • To promote all technologies developed within the European bioenergy industry;
    • To support any national or international initiative promoting bioenergy;
    • To actively promote the abolition of any technical or trade barriers which hamper the development of an open bioenergy market at European-level.
  • An umbrella organisation

    Bioenergy Europe is the umbrella organisation of the European Pellet Council (EPC) and the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC). These networks have been created thanks to the internal dynamic of our members. Today, these two networks are an essential part of Bioenergy Europe's internal organisation and bring together bioenergy experts and company representatives from all over Europe.

  • European Pellet Council

    The European Pellet Council (EPC), founded in 2010, is the voice of the wood pellet sector in Europe. Its members are national pellet associations or related organisations from 18 countries. EPC aims at solving the issues related to the transition from a niche product to a major energy commodity. These issues include the standardisation and certification of pellet quality, safety, security of supply, education and training, and the quality of pellet-using devices. EPC coordinates, ENplus®, the world-leading pellet quality certification.

  • International Biomass Torrefaction Council

    The International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC) is a Brussels based international platform founded in 2012, which brings together more than 23 companies from all over the world. IBTC was founded by Bioenergy Europe (former AEBIOM) and resulted from the joint efforts of major torrefied biomass stakeholders who decided to create a discussion platform of companies with similar interests. IBTC was initiated in collaboration with the Dutch Torrefaction Association (DTA). IBTC is a unique network connecting all companies with a shared interest in torrefaction and solid biofuels, connecting industry players and academia to undertake actions that drive torrefied biomass forward.
