How clean is the air you’re breathing right now? How does the air in your city compare with that of a neighbouring city or region? Air pollution is the single largest environmental health risk in Europe. The European Environment Agency's European Air Quality Index allows users to understand more about air quality where they live. Displaying up-to-the-minute data for the whole of Europe, users can gain new insights into the air quality of individual countries, regions and cities.

What should be done to improve the air quality?
As an end-user, with few small and simple tricks, you can easily ensure that you home appliances emits the lowest particles possible while drastically improving its efficiency.
However, policies should also be put in place in order to support consumers' willingness and commitment!
Check out our series of videos below to learn more about simple guidelines to ensure clean residential wood heating systems.
-
Replace old and inefficient appliances
Political and financial support should be given to end-consumers to foster a switch of appliances.
-
Use of cleaner and more efficient fuels
Requirements on fuel quality should be introduced via standard and certification scheme.
-
Train installers and do regular maintenance
Installers and chimney sweepers should be given a central role to ensure efficient functioning of biomass stoves.
-
Raise awareness about the right use and maintenance technique
Consumers’ knowledge on proper burning techniques should be improved.

Our Pledge
The biomass industry is conscious of its responsibilities and is willing to take a leading role in the improvement of air quality. We are working to increase the share of renewable energy in Europe and worldwide, acknowledging our position as the biggest renewable energy technology. We provide most of the renewable heating and cooling, which accounts for an important portion of household energy consumption. As buildings play a prominent role in air pollution, we are ready to lead the effort to improve air quality. We are committed to decarbonise European economy while reducing pollutants whose high concentration can be harmful for humans, such as particle matter (PM), nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3) and banzo(a)phyrene (BaP), in particular in urban areas where its concentration can be harmful.
While aiming at improving EU air quality, we commit to:
- Adopt the vision of a 100% renewable heating & cooling sector by 2050 (80% by 2040) as part of a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions European Union.
- Support the replacement of the existing stock of old and inefficient biomass installations with modern highly efficient nearly-zero emissions biomass installations.
- Increase awareness through the chain, from installers to consumers to better understand most-suited low emissions solutions and how to increase efficiency in stoves and boilers.
- Make use of the better available fuel, as biomass emissions are related to water content and ultimately combustion efficiency.
- Acknowledge the higher incidence of poor air quality in urban and industrial areas in order to better address causes and solutions to this problem.
- Promote and incentivise the development of scientific understanding of the impact of different pollutants and their main sources.
To deliver the expected results, this pledge must be completed by policies and awareness-raising activities and a large support by numerous and various stakeholders of Bioenergy Europe’s efforts to improve air quality.
